Can you believe it? The iPhone was first released a whole decade ago back in 2007. MGT Design take a look at how the iPhone has evolved over the past 10 years.
2007 – The First Ever iPhone
In 2007 Steve Jobs unveiled the first ever iPhone and little did he know the success that it would be today. The iPhone made a huge impact on the mobile phone industry in being one of the first smart phones. The first iPhone did not have 3G or an App Store, which just shows how far it has come over the years.
2008 – iPhone 3G
In 2008 Apple had to quickly catch up with the rest of the mobile phone manufacturers and added the 3G connectivity to the iPhone. In this year the App store was first introduced giving birth to Apps on the iPhone. The iPhone 3G was available with black fronts and either a black or a white back.
2009 – iPhone 3GS
In 2009 we met the first every ‘S’ series of the iPhone with the iPhone 3GS. This was a better phone than the iPhone 3G, being much faster. You could finally copy and paste text and the App store had become even more of a success with gaming Apps.
2010 – iPhone 4
It took 3 years for a new iPhone shape to come out, which was the iPhone 4. A much more squared shape than the iPhone 3GS. As Apple started to understand the importance of a camera on a smart phone, the camera was much improved and there was also a camera on the front for ‘Selfies‘. The high density retina screen made the iPhone 4 stand out above other smart phones available at the time. The iPhone 4 was available in either black or white.
2011 – iPhone 4S
In 2011 we were introduced to Siri and the world of artificial intelligence. Siri could answer questions simply by holding down the home button and would help you make phone calls, send texts and even tell you what the weather was going to be like. The iPhone 4S had improved reception by redesigning the antenna bands which had previously caused problems with previous iPhone model, the iPhone 4.
2012 – iPhone 5
It took just two years for Apple to bring out a 3rd shaped iPhone, the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 was much slimmer than the iPhone 4S as well as being much lighter and more attractive. Apple also removed the large dock connector which had been used across many Apple products such as the iPod and the iPad and replaced it with the Lightening Connector which has been much more popular since. With the iPhone 5, more colours were introduced; Space Grey, Silver or Gold.
2013 – iPhone 5S & iPhone 5C
In 2013 Apple introduced Touch ID in the iPhone 5S which meant users could unlock their iPhone by simply lightly holding their finger on top of the home button. This created a safer form of security for the iPhone and could be used instead of the pass code.
In 2013 the iPhone 5C was also released. The iPhone 5C was simply an iPhone 5 with variety of coloured backs and available to the market as a cheaper alternative to the iPhone 5S. Those that wanted the technical advances and an altogether better phone were advised to go for a 5S.
2014 – iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus
Apple had to compete with their biggest competition Samsung and in 2014 decided to go for a complete design change and introduced their biggest phone yet, the iPhone 6 and the even bigger iPhone 6 Plus. Despite numerous flaws to begin with such as the phone bending in customers pockets, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were a huge success.
2015 – iPhone 6S & iPhone 6S Plus
2015 welcomed the new and improved iPhone 6 with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. The iPhone 6S was much quicker than the iPhone 6 and we were also introduced to a pressure sensitive screen with 3D Touch gestures. A new coloured iPhone was also introduced in the new colour trend, rose gold a lovely pink shade which has been very popular since.
2016 – iPhone SE, iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus
Apple were very busy in 2016. At the begining of the year Apple surprised those waiting for the next generation iPhone with the iPhone SE. The iPhone SE was basically the shape of an iPhone 5S with the technicalities of an iPhone 6S. This was a welcomed surprise to those that weren’t fond of the bigger phone and who quickly snapped up this latest iPhone.
Later on in 2016, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were released. With a similar shape to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, the latest release gave new and improved technology by being the first waterproof iPhone and shocked users by there being no headphone socket by introducing wireless headphones available to purchase separately. This caused a bit of an outrage, however users were happy to find that the iPhone did come with headphones which could be plugged into the lightening socket.
2017
In 2017 we are left wondering what the next iPhone will be. Could it be time for the next generation iPhone to be released with a brand new shape by the end of the year? First of all there will be the iPhone 7S which will be a new and improved iPhone 7, but the main focus will be on the iPhone 8 which may make customers want to wait a further 6 months to be able to get one of these instead.
